Moving to Las Vegas With Kids? What to Know About Schools Before Choosing a Neighborhood
If you're moving to Las Vegas with school-age children, there's something I think you should research before you fall in love with a house: schools.
This is especially important for families relocating from another state because the Las Vegas school system may work differently than what you're accustomed to.
I often hear people look at an online school rating, see a number they don't love and immediately cross an entire area off their list.
But there's much more to the story.
Las Vegas families have access to traditional public schools, magnet programs, public charter schools and private schools. Depending on your child's needs, the school you ultimately choose may not even be the school assigned to your home address.
So before choosing your Las Vegas neighborhood based entirely on a number you found online, here's what you should know.
Most Traditional Public Schools Are Part of CCSD
The Clark County School District serves Las Vegas, Henderson and the surrounding Clark County area.
For traditional public schools, your home address generally determines which school your child is zoned to attend.
That makes school zoning an important consideration when you're buying a home.
And here's something relocation buyers sometimes don't realize:
A Las Vegas mailing address doesn't necessarily tell you everything you need to know about the schools associated with that property.
Even homes located relatively close to one another can potentially have different school assignments.
Before making a housing decision based on a particular school, parents should verify the current zoning directly with CCSD.
Don't Rely on a School Rating Alone
This is one of the biggest things I want relocating parents to understand.
You've probably seen websites that assign schools a rating such as 4/10, 7/10 or 9/10.
Those numbers can be useful as one piece of information, but they shouldn't necessarily be the entire decision.
Look deeper.
What programs does the school offer?
What does the Nevada Department of Education data show?
Does the school offer programs that are particularly important to your child?
What are the enrollment requirements?
What does the school's own website tell you?
And most importantly, is that actually the school your child would attend?
Do your own research rather than choosing—or eliminating—a neighborhood based solely on one number.
Las Vegas Has Tuition-Free Public Charter Schools
This is something many relocation families don't realize.
Las Vegas has a large number of public charter schools, and public charter schools are tuition-free.
One name you'll hear frequently around the valley is Pinecrest Academy, which operates multiple campuses in Southern Nevada.
But living near a charter school doesn't automatically mean your child attends that school.
Charter schools can have their own application and enrollment procedures, and when applications exceed available seats, admission may involve a lottery.
That's a major difference from simply purchasing a house inside a traditional public-school attendance boundary.
If a particular charter school is important to your family, investigate its enrollment process and deadlines before planning your home purchase around it.
What About Magnet Schools?
CCSD also offers magnet programs.
These programs can focus on areas such as STEM, performing arts, technology, medical studies, career and technical education and other specialized subjects.
Magnet programs have their own application requirements and timelines.
That means a family moving to Las Vegas may have educational options beyond the traditional neighborhood school—but you need to know those options exist early enough to research them.
Las Vegas Also Has Private-School Options
Private education is another option throughout the valley.
One of the best-known names is Bishop Gorman High School, particularly because of its academics, extracurricular programs and nationally recognized athletics.
But Bishop Gorman isn't the only private-school option.
There are private and independent schools serving different grade levels, educational philosophies and areas of the Las Vegas Valley.
Unlike public and charter schools, private schools charge tuition and have their own admissions requirements.
For families considering private education, where you live may therefore be less about a school attendance boundary and more about
how far you're willing to drive every morning and afternoon.
Summerlin, Henderson or Southern Highlands?
This is where relocation gets interesting.
A buyer might tell me:
“I heard Summerlin has the best schools.”
Or:
“Someone told me I should only look in Henderson because of the schools.”
That's when I encourage them to research further.
Rather than having your REALTOR® decide which school is “good” or “bad,” use objective school information and determine what's right for your child.
Then we can use your housing criteria to look at homes that fit the rest of your needs.
For example, if you've already decided on a particular charter or private school, commute time to that campus might suddenly become an important part of your home search.
That's a much more useful conversation than simply saying one entire side of Las Vegas has “better schools.”
Research the School AND the House
When you're relocating with children, your home search isn't just:
Bedrooms + Bathrooms + Price
It may also include:
School options + Commute + Enrollment + Lifestyle + Housing
And sometimes those pieces affect each other.
You may find the perfect house and then discover the school situation doesn't work for your family.
Or you may discover a charter, magnet or private-school option that gives you more flexibility in where you can livethan you originally thought.
That's why I recommend researching both at the same time.
